KNX IP Interface

A KNX IP interface connects an ETS computer to the KNX bus over the LAN. Unlike an IP router, it does not forward telegrams between lines, it is exclusively a gateway for ETS and visualisation systems.

IP Interface vs. IP Router

Both device types enable ETS tunneling (programming over the network). The IP router additionally provides routing: it connects two TP lines via IP and filters telegrams like a line coupler. The IP interface cannot do this, it is only an access point.

For an installation requiring only ETS access and visualisation (no IP backbone), an IP interface is sufficient. If multiple lines are to be connected via IP, IP routers are needed.

Key Facts

  • Tunneling: max. 4 simultaneous connections
  • IP interface: no routing between lines
  • IP router: tunneling + routing + galvanic isolation
  • ETS discovers devices automatically via UDP discovery
  • Remote access only via VPN or KNX IP Secure
