KNX ETS – the Engineering Tool Software

The KNX Engineering Tool Software (ETS) is the only official tool for configuring and commissioning KNX projects. Developed and maintained by the KNX Association, it runs on Windows.

What ETS Does

ETS manages the project structure (building, floors, rooms), imports device data from the online product catalogue or as .knxprod files, allows setting all device parameters, assigning group addresses and linking COs.

At the end of the project, ETS downloads the configuration directly into each device via USB or KNXnet/IP. For the download, the programming button on the device must be pressed so ETS can set the physical address.

Licence Levels and Alternatives

ETS Inside is free and limited to 5 devices, sufficient for testing and training. ETS Lite allows up to 64 devices (one-time price), ETS Professional is unlimited and aimed at system integrators (annual subscription approx. €790).

For pure planning without download, alternatives exist: venfree generates room planning, device bill of materials and CO assignments, without an ETS licence. For final commissioning (download to device), ETS remains indispensable.

KNX Physical Address (Individual Address)
Every KNX device has an individual (physical) address in the format X.Y.Z, indicating its place in the topology. It is set once via ETS + programming button and is necessary for downloading the device configuration.
KNX Group Address
A KNX group address (GA) is a logical address that links communication objects (COs) of different devices. Whatever is written to a GA is received by all other COs bound to that GA, the publish-subscribe principle of KNX.
KNX Commissioning
KNX commissioning is the step where ETS writes the finished configuration into the physical devices. It requires physical or IP access to the KNX bus and ETS Professional.
KNX Project File (.knxproj)
A .knxproj file contains the complete configuration of a KNX installation: building structure, all devices, all group addresses, all parameterisations and all GA-CO links. It is the central backup for every KNX installation.
