KNX Project File (.knxproj)

A .knxproj file contains the complete configuration of a KNX installation: building structure, all devices, all group addresses, all parameterisations and all GA-CO links. It is the central backup for every KNX installation.

Structure and Contents

A .knxproj file is a ZIP archive with XML files (standard IEC 62386, from ETS 4 onwards). It can be opened with a ZIP tool and the XML files read directly. Typical contents: project metadata (ETS version, date), building structure, device configurations (one XML per device) and application programs.

File size: small projects (10–50 devices) → 100–500 KB; large projects (200+ devices) → 1–10 MB. A .knxproj file contains everything needed to reconstruct and re-download the installation.

Opening Without ETS and Backup

venfree opens .knxproj files directly in the browser and visualises group addresses, device list and channel information, without an ETS licence. This is useful for analysis, documentation and planning.

The .knxproj should be backed up after every change to the installation, at minimum locally, preferably on cloud storage. Without a backup, a reliable restart after a device replacement or extension is impossible, as devices cannot export their configuration.

Key Facts

  • Format: ZIP archive with XML files
  • Standard: IEC 62386 (from ETS 4)
  • Contains: devices, parameters, GAs, CO links
  • venfree opens .knxproj without ETS
  • Backup strongly recommended after every change
